In an unprecedented Rajini blitz, all cinema theatres in Puducherry and its suburbs are set to screen the Superstar’s Lingaa scheduled for release on his birthday on Friday.
Directed by K.S. Ravikumar, the film will be screened in 12 screens including seven in the city proper.
This sets a new benchmark for releases featuring the superstars, including Rajinikanth himself.
Usually, the big budget releases by stars such as Kamal Hassan, Vijay, Suriya, Ajit or Vikram get a maximum of three screens in the city. Rajinikanth’s previous venture, Kochadaiiyaan released in the city only on two screens.
“Since it is a Rajinikanth film, we will have 60 shows across all the screens on the opening day. We have planned 48 shows during the weekend and the number of shows will decrease subsequently,” Lucky R. Perumal, president of Puducherry State Film Exhibitors Association told The Hindu.
Theatres in the city have approximately sold out over 60,000 tickets in advance and online for the opening weekend.
Tourists from Bengaluru and Chennai visiting the city for the weekend have also booked tickets.
“The release of the trailer has created a buzz and fans are eagerly waiting to catch superstar Rajinikanth on the screen. Rajini’s Kochadaiiyaan, an animation film, was screened only in two theatres in the city,” said a theatre-owner.
